The New War On Drugs

A new war on drugs in America

The Anti-drug.com website features a whole host of media items designed to educate parents about prescription drug abuse among teenagers. The main thrust of the site seems to be that most parents have no clue how prevalent the problem of prescription drug abuse is among teens, and that parents are the first line of defense in preventing it from happening. In one section of the site, parents are guided through a virtual tour of all the different and easy ways that their teens can get their hands on prescription drugs - medicine cabinets in their own home, from friends - and yes - even from their own grandparents.

Of course, half the time, teens are taking the very drugs prescribed to them by their own doctors while their parents take little notice, blissfully unaware that their child is selling his Adderall for $5 a pop to his eager classmates. Taking (and often snorting) Adderall, Ritalin, Xanax, Vicodin and Percoset is par for the course in high school these days. In the recently popular movie “Juno,” a high school student tells the quick-tongued protagonist Juno that she is feeling unfocused. “I’ll sell you some of my Adderall if you want,” Juno quips in response. It’s just that ingrained in our culture… alcohol, aside from being SO 1995, is merely the chaser to wash the pills down.
